Road Roller Troubleshooting and Repair: Electrical System

1. Battery runs out of power quickly.

Causes:

1.1 The road roller's working cycle time is too short, resulting in insufficient battery charging.

1.2 Short circuit in the electrical system.

1.3 Sulfated battery plates, preventing charging.

Solutions:

1.1 Perform auxiliary work to charge the battery.

1.2 Locate and repair the faulty component.

1.3 Adjust the electrolyte specific gravity and recharge.

Tip: When checking electrical faults, using basic measuring tools such as a multimeter will allow for accurate and quick fault diagnosis.

2. Ammeter pointer fluctuates.

Causes: Loose connection between the battery and ammeter.

Solutions: Locate the loose connection and tighten it.

3. Starter motor is weak.

Causes:

3.1 Insufficient battery power.

3.2 Loose connection.

Solutions:

3.1 Charge or replace the battery.

3.2 Tighten.

4. Electrical instruments are not working.

Causes:

4.1 Damaged instruments or sensors.

4.2 Loose connections.

4.3 Broken or leaking wires.

Solutions:

4.1 Replace.

4.2 Tighten.

4.3 Repair or replace.

5. Generator does not generate electricity or charging current is very low (battery not fully charged).

Causes:

5.1 Drive belt is too loose or slipping.

5.2 Regulator malfunction.

5.3 Generator malfunction.

Solutions:

5.1 Adjust belt tension.

5.2 With the diesel engine running at low speed, short-circuit the two terminals of the regulator: "Ignition" and "Magnetic Field" with a wire. Observe the spark. If a spark appears and the ammeter indicates charging, it proves that the regulator is faulty and needs to be replaced.

5.31 Use a DC voltmeter to check if the generator is generating electricity. Connect the voltmeter (+) to the generator's "armature" terminal and the voltmeter (-) to the generator casing. When the engine is running, the voltmeter should indicate that the battery voltage rises to approximately 28 volts, indicating that the generator is working normally. If the voltmeter reading remains unchanged, the generator is not generating electricity.

5.32 Check if the generator is generating electricity with a light bulb. First, disconnect the wire connected to the generator's "armature" terminal. Then, connect the live wire of a vehicle light bulb (such as a dashboard light) to the "armature" terminal. The other terminal does not need to be connected (it is already grounded). If the bulb lights up when the engine is running at low speed, it indicates that the generator is generating electricity. If it does not light up, the generator is not generating electricity, and the generator is faulty and should be disassembled and repaired.

6. Ammeter pointer swings excessively.

Causes:

6.1 Poor contact of the generator carbon brushes.

6.2 Burnt regulator contacts resulting in poor contact.

Solutions:

6.1 Disassemble and repair.

6.2 Disassemble and repair.

7. Excessive charging current.

Causes:

7.1 The regulator's voltage setting is too high.

7.2 Regulator contacts burned out.

7.3 Regulator coil end detached, losing its regulating function.

Solutions:

7.1 Must be readjusted to the specified range.

7.2 Should be disassembled for inspection or replaced.

7.3 Open the regulator and resolder it securely.

8. Other lights, indicator lights not working, and horn not working.

Causes: Circuit fault, damaged electrical components, and blown fuse.

Solutions: Check the wiring, fuses, and related electrical components.
